How did you get inspired starting your own business and how did it all start?
I was looking for at starting my own little creative business and after visiting the Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay for the first time I decided that I wanted my own market stall there. I applied for a stall with a few products I had been experimenting on. Some of which were the decorative words. They were an instant hit and the range has been constantly growing ever since.
Please describe the working process of your products.
The graphics are created on the computer and then cut using a CNC router. They are then hand sanded and sprayed with primer. They then get sanded again and sprayed color, sanded, sprayed final colour coat and then a technique edging is done before they are finally sealed.
How many people do you employ in your company?
We have four people doing manufacturing. Everyone started without the skills required and have trained with us to learn how. We have a lovely group of young ladies who work at our markets. As of March I now hired one of them full time to help me to run the markets and do administration. Making more time for creativity :-)
At which markets do you offer your products and how do you organize family life and work?
We are permanently based at the Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay and the Watershed at the V&A Waterfront. As well as doing a number of pop up events throughout the year.
It can be a bit challenging managing time between work and family life but both are a very important part of my life. So its very much a family business. I often can be found setting up big pop up markets with the family all with me. A bit chaotic times but it always seems to work out and we are happy together.
You live in the beautiful Noordhoek area close to the Cape Point. What are your favorite spots in this area? What would you recommend families?
I love where I live so much to do as a family in Cape Town. I grew up in Hout Bay and there are local boat trips and the World of Birds. Closest to home in Kommetjie is a lovely farm called Imhoffs gift with a beautiful restaurant and petting zoo. We love to go for walks along the Vlei area near our house and down on the board walk at Kommetjie lighthouse.
When we are at the V&A doing our deliveries together on the weekends then we always visit the Two Oceans Aquarium.
My favorite restaurant - Blue Water at Imhoffs Gift
... beach - Kommetjie Beach
...market - Bay Harbor Market
...vineyard - Cape Point Vineyard (food market every Thursday)
