Upcycling at it's best
How did you get inspired starting your own business and how did it all start?
It all started with my husband Andre going to the dump, seeing some wood lying there, bringing it home and banging up a frame in the garage. One of my friends saw it, liked it and asked us to make them some and it just took off from there!
Please describe the working process of your products.
We collect old wood from the dump and it comes back to the factory. It then gets de-nailed and cut into workable strips. The items are then made up by our carpenter and then routed, painted and sanded to get a distressed look! They are then sealed. After that process we put in the glass, pictures, backings and then finally the hangers.
How many people do you employ in your company?
I have four guys working for me and they are all from Malawi.
At which markets do you offer your products and how do you organize family life and work?
I do a lot of Christmas Markets all over the peninsula. I have a permanent stand at Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay and the Longbeach Craft Market in Noordhoek.
I try to get most of my work done in the morning so that my afternoons are free to fetch/carry my children.Druing season it is rather manic, but I have friends that I can rely on to help with lifting and things. My husband is also very supportive and helps wherever he can with the business.
You live in the beautiful Noordhoek area. What are your favorite spots in this area? What would you recommend to families?
I would recommend any of the beautiful beaches that are close by - Kommetjie Beach for surfing, Bourlders Beach for the penguins, Fish Hoek Beach for swimming and Noordhoek Beach for horse riding.
My favorite restaurant - Monkey Valley because of its views
... beach - Fish Hoek Beach
...market - Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay
...vineyard - Cape Point Vineyards in Noordhoek - they have a fabulous food market on Thursday night
